literature analysis #1

The Diary of a Girl by Anne Frank
Topics and Events
1.
a) The Diary of a girl is talked by Anne Frank as a young, Jewish girl trying to not become a victim of the Halocaust. She writes nearly everyday in her journal explains her experiences such as: her hideout, her family, and her emotions. Her and her family get close with one other family remain in hideout barely being able to make noise day to day in fear of being found. As the war goes on, situations become worse.
b) Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl, along with her family records her experiences in a diary as her and her family overcome one of the most brutal acts on humanity, the Halocaust.
2.The author, Anne Frank chose to right about this event because she was directly affected by it. Her people were targeted for all social and economic problems. Anne Frank wanted to record this time in her life because she knew that one day this racial act on Jewish people would be over and people needed to know what life at this time for a targeted group was. She herself wanted to remember this time of life in detail as you can tell in her descriptive entries. Anne Frank wanted people to see a real insight of the Halocaust. Aside from what text books say, but a real account. A true, personal story.
3. I chose this book because I had some background on the history of this event. Knowing the cruel acts that went on then, I knew that reading a true story of this time period would further advance my knowledge of the Halocaust. I also thought it would be interesting reading of a poor girl's experiences and really imagining her life as it continued and how hard it must have been living day to day in fear for your life. Also, an emotional appeal on literature really appeals to me because I enjoy relating or furthermore imagining. This book is clearly emotional considering the tragic conditions. This book is very famous and world-wide, so I had her about it before, but never sat down and actually read it.
4. I found this book to be EXTREMELY realistic because of not only my historical knowledge, but the fact that this book is so widely known and it was published after the time of Anne's death. She didn't know that her diary would be published therefore she couldn't have made major changes to her story. I don't think I could relate this story so much to my life because it is so intensely sad and I have not dealt with such tragedy. However, I did relate her story to what I have learned over the years between movies, history class, and other literature pieces. I also connected her story to my emotions directly. As I read, I felt how she felt to a certain degree. As I read, I could hardly bear the thought of Anne actually living through what she did.
Style
1. Anne Frank chose to use a journalistic style because she wrote her diaries everyday. She never knew what the next day would bring. She also died before her diary was published so she was not able to even go back and edit things about her story. Not many fictional techniques were used. One that was used throughout her story was pathos. Her whole diary was appealing to emotion. I think this was not even done intentionally. Just the fact that the story was so tragic was enough to say pathos was used.
2. Anne frank definitely uses lengthy descriptions to show the personalities of all the characters. At the beginning of the book, she describes each member in her class with a detailed description. She also does the same for any main character later in this book. Eventually, you see how Anne is right about her characters through their dialogue, but the initial introduction to her characters are descriptions by Anne.
 3. Personally, I think the mood of this story sets itself. It is already a horrific story so people are already sympathetic to this. But, Anne appeals to emotion as I said before, using pathos. The way she describes each sad event that takes place, for example, their living conditions, the description really uses pathos because of the extreme measures.
4.The authors attitude toward the subject was, in a sense, calm and settle. Anne never though, even after the whole war was over, that humanity was evil. She still, even after all that she went through, had a positive outlook on life. She quoted near the end of her book this amazing quote,  "I keep my ideals, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart." This quote alone truly shows her attitude at the end of the war and her outlook on life. Her attitude toward the audience was not pity. She was never looking for anyone's approval or disapproval of her experience. She simply wanted to record her story for her own self. If people were to read it one day, she simply wanted readers to know what happened at this time. Not in pity for her or her family, but for the historical aspect of the matter. Anne Frank was an amazing girl with an even better outlook on life.
5. Anne Frank personally didn't include any kind of historical information about her story. This was because, it was strictly a diary. She wasn't trying to prove anything to anyone. She also didn't have access to any sort of these items as she was in hiding, and died before her book was even published. She herself did not include these things. However, her father who ended up deciding to publish her diary, chose to include family photos. These family photos helped put a face to the name I read about. These family photos helped understand the time period. These family photos helped relate for me in a sense. This extra piece of history didn't so much influence my thinking, but it made the book that much more interesting for me.

“Although I'm only fourteen, I know quite well what I want, I know who is right and who is wrong. I have my opinions, my own ideas and principles, and although it may sound pretty mad from an adolescent, I feel more of a person than a child, I feel quite independent of anyone.”-Anne Frank, The Diary of a Girl. This is one idea I love from this book. Anne represents herself as such an independent, mature girl. So many adults think that young teenagers are immature or not capable of many things. Here Anne expressed her mature attitude. In a couple of years of Anne's life, she experienced more hardships than many adults do in a lifetime. This helped Anne develop at such an early age. Like the famous quote says, tough times don't last, but tough people do. Anne remained tough at this time and got through this tough time. I will remember Anne's bravery and mature demeanor through this rough time in her life.
People
1. Anne is a young teenage girl at the time of the event. She, therefore encountered many young people as well through school. At the beginning of the book, she actually takes a whole days worth of an entry to describe each person in her class. Because of her age, she has a developing attitude and is self revolved. You can make this assumption because many of her classmates are described as dumb, annoying, or dirty minded. Also, Anne describes her mother as someone who does not listen to Anne's needs or understands Anne much at all. From this I came to a conclusion that Anne has a snotty demeanor. The only person she speaks good of is her father. We now know that Anne is a daddy's girl.
2. Mrs. Van Daan is the mother of the other family in hiding. Mrs. Van Daan is only referred to as this, and Madame. She alone is enough to make the household go crazy. She can best be described as stingy, snotty, and abrupt. Anything that she brought to their "hideout home" cannot be used by the Franks. One by one, she starts removing items that were in public vicinities and storing them for her family's personal use. She is also snotty and abrupt in that she punishes Anne herself for things Mr. nor Mrs. Frank would punish her for. She also has the nerve to continually criticize Anne's upbringing. Peter is Mrs. Van Daan's son. Peter is a young boy who is shy and immature. Peter does not get along well with Anne at all. He also continues to mouth off to his parents which send him to his "room" without a bed or dinner. Peter can be easily angered, but can also easily anger anyone. Anne vaguely describes him as unfriendly. I would characterize them indirectly because their actions speak for themselves. Through the mishaps they perform the readers are able to tell what kind of character they are.
3. These two characters make the story more interesting. Between them two, they create enough arguments to last the whole war. Because they are from the same family, they have many similar characteristics. Anne is always finding a reason to complain with Peter and his mother, Mrs. Van Daan hiding with them. The way that the son and mother are so similar makes them interesting characters to compare and contrast.

Racism

Racism in America hasn’t disappeared. There is a lot of discrimination on Mexicans and blacks. It is all racial profiling and it ties into the history of slavery and the rising resentment against immigrants. What is the concept is the concept of “race”? The concept of race remains unclear to many. No one likes to be judged just by their ethnicity, race, or color. We as a country need to stop judging people every time we see someone. Do not tell me you have never judged someone because everyone does it.

What do we know about racism? What is racism? Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another races or races. "Racism." Def. 1a. Webster’s Third New World Dictionary. 1993. Print.  It is a complex idea that has shaped each of our destinies.

What would happen if there was no more racism? Racism has caused so much violent and crime in this world. Racial discrimination happens every day and hurts many. It affects everyone either by bullying to even gangs.  You hear on the news almost every day about racism. There are so many articled that you read about racism. The other day I saw in the news paper, “Man killed because of his race!” That is scary.

One of the problems is people always assume that if you are from a certain race you either won’t succeed or your only job should be working out in the fields. I have seen this situation happen plenty of times. People disrespect Mexicans all the time and think that we cannot have a better job other then working out in the fields or picking up after others like a maid or janitor.  You should not judge someone for where they come from. Judge someone by what they bring to the table.

No matter where you go, there is going to be racism. At some point in your life, I am sure you have racist. It is all in your thought process and how you were raised. I know some parents wouldn’t let their kids play with other kids that aren’t white. When you hear some trying to insult someone and they say “big nose”, you instantly know they are talking about Jews.  We are all taught differently and at a young age and we carry that throughout our life which is part of the problem.

Racism affects a lot of jobs which affects living. Some people don’t hire certain people because they think that it is going to make the company look bad. The people who mostly get affected are Mexicans and blacks.  What usually happens is if you were to call in for a job and stated a white name then they would be interested. What would happen if you called and said a Hispanic name? Most likely they won’t be interested. This has actually happened to one of my cousins. We are Hispanic and she mentioned her last name which is Sanchez and they had said they don’t have any more openings. She called back the next day and said a white last name and they were interested. This is another reason why we Hispanics can’t get a higher level job because this is happening and this shouldn’t be allowed.

Researching racism was definitely something that I expected. Most articles were talking about how racism affected certain groups and there was a lot of violent and crime going on because of their race. The Washington post. “Racism.” The Washington post. 18 July 2009 http://articles.washingtonpost.com/keyword/racism. Also a lot of people would be looked down at and being denied access to certain things due to their position in society. This annoys me ne to see people treat others like they are non-existent or just trash like they do not matter.

I also found that not only people are going to be denied for their race, but also because of their race and how they appear. Meaning how tall, color of hair, skinny, and how fat you are. A lot of people throughout the world are struggling because of this. This is one of the big reasons why there is unemployment. Our economy is harsh and isn’t going to change unless we are the change. Our community would be so much better if we came together. Why can’t we be the same? Think of how much easier and better life would be if we were actually equal.

One thing that really caught my eye was the educational system here in the United States. The system can deny equal access to the children and adults of color and their background like if they are poor. I don’t find it fair how we aren’t granted the same opportunity. People actually want to get somewhere in life and how will we succeed if we don’t get chances too? it is like they are setting up for failure. We are getting such a negative impact that at some point we just want to give up. We need that extra push and guidance tot eh right path. You would think that they would keep all the talk about racism and poverty out of school. I don’t want my kids to be learning about the wrong things in school. School should be teaching kids about the right things and how everyone is equal. You never know what the next thing a teacher can be teaching children.

As I was doing some more research, I saw a couple good articles that were positive. It really caught my eye so I decided to keep reading. What I mean by positive is that people are saying put an end to racism and want to actually do something about it. They are motivating people to fight against racism. The articles mention that people have a voice and they should use it. Everyone makes a difference. They aren’t alone, fight for what is right.

Everyday I see racism happen. It even happens to me especially because I am Latina. As a Latina, people have personally told me I won’t get far. It motivates me to go farther and to show those people that I will be successful. A lot of people will say that they don’t see racism happen. It is an everyday thing. It is sad to see this constantly and it just seems to be a normal thing.

Racism isn’t only a big problem in the United States but also all over the world. In the eastern side like Hong Kong and India are the least tolerant of neighboring with a different race. Latin countries are the most tolerant of being neighborly and friendly with different races. They are more welcoming.

Racial discrimination and racism are on the uprising and becoming common throughout the world. With the current global situation confirming the worst expectations that mans worst tendencies are created in the womb. People all over the world are being denied jobs because of their ethnicity. All about popular issues. “world racism.” All about popular issues. 2 February 2005 http://www.allaboutpopularissues.org/world-racism-faq.htm

It’s not just in the United States that people are being denied because of their color, but everywhere around the world as well.  People are struggling to pay for bills or even to get food on their plate for their family. If people aren’t helping getting those jobs then what are we suppose to do? This world is becoming really scary because people are afraid to speak up because they are afraid they will be judged.

While doing research, I found out that in Asia racism is actually encouraged.  They don’t care about the issues you have as an individual.  Division among class is also a problem there. Global issue.”Racism around the world.” global issues. 8 August 2010 http://www.globalissues.org/article/165/racism . Your job defines who you are. You get judged by your appearance there in Asia. You have no opportunity to identify yourself and become unique. Once you are seen as someone with no money and have a bad job, you will be looked down too. You will not be important.

I put some deep thought into racism and how it everywhere. Why can’t we just stop this? Have been not seen what kind of world we live in? We can be the change and make it a better place for the future generations. I don’t care what other people say but every person matters. Let’s teach kids at a young age to be kind to one another and avoid hatred. Wouldn’t you want to live in a world where everyone was equal? That would sure make me want to actually be in this planet. Respect is a big key in life so make sure you give it even though sometimes it won’t be given back to you. You want to be the bigger person.

I personally want racism to end. If everyone makes a change and tries to stop racism, racial discrimination won’t be around. Racial discrimination is definitely something that can be ignored. Statistics show that racism is actually not as big in the United States as it is in other countries. That makes me feel horrible inside. I thought it was bad enough here! People are being bullied ever day because how they look. Before you say a rude comment to someone, stop into their shows and see what it is like to be looked down to and not have the chance to explain yourself or show what you are capable of. Criticism happens on a daily basses and you may not notice it. Step up for others if you see this happening.

If we stop racism, it’s not going to happen overnight. It will slowly become a better place to live if we make the change. We can change our habits in the help of others. You never know what someone is capable of and they might surprise you. It’s great to be different, but the way people see it is a bad thing. When someone is different, people get jealous and try to drag them down. Don’t be that person. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. You never know who you are inspiring.

Even though racism has a high chance of ending, don’t stop trying to make the change. Every person makes a difference. Teach children right and accept people by who they are. We can all unite together and it would be a better place to live in.

Literature Analysis #3

Topics and Events
1.)summary: A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard is a memoir about a young girl who got kidnapped at the young age of 11 on her way to school. One day she was living with her loving mother and step father and baby sister and the next she was forced to live with this stranger who decided to keep her and brainwash her for eighteen years of her life(scary). Throughout the book, Jaycee shares a horrific experience that's difficult to even imagine and gives the reader a chance to follow the hardships that Jaycee faced for eighteen years.
2.) I believe Jaycee Dugard choice to write about her kidnapping to help with awareness and share this amazing story with the world, and how she's choosing to overcome it and make the best out of the rest of her life. it must have been hard to go through this but I'm glad she wrote it because it definitely opened a lot of eyes.
3.) My friend had this book and one day she was talking about it and it seemed interesting so I decided to read it. I am glad I picked it because it was very touching.
4.) Being that this book was in fact a memoir it was very realistic. It's the true story of a young girl who's life gotten taken away from her. Every distinct moment that she can remember is written down in words, sharing her experiences in the most personal way, available for anyone who'd like to read. It had such powerful impact.

Style

1.) The author used more of a journalistic style than anything else. She wrote from a day to day basis but instead it was written as a memoir. There are also some pages from her real journal that she kept during the eighteen years that she was kidnapped printed in the book.
2.) The author focused on lengthy descriptions of people and places because since she was writing about the past, it was important to provide as much detail to give the reader a better understanding of what she went through. This allows the reader to fully imagine where she was and who she was with during those eighteen years.
3.) As I've mentioned the tone throughout the story never seems to change and remains constant and calm, leaving the reader to really having to imagine how she must have felt.
4.) I believe that it is absolutely impossible to put the Jaycee's attitude toward the subject and and characters into words. No one will ever know what she had to go through or what those eighteen years were like. We can read her story to develop the best understanding possible, but even then is it impossible to even imagine what she must have felt like at times. I think she's grown numb to her past and her kidnapping but I don't think the pain of what happened to her will ever leave.
5.) The only resource Jaycee Dugard needed to validate this story was her own personal experience. Everything she wrote about happened TO HER, so she was really the only source that could possibly write about this story.

People

1.) The authors tone is very nonchalant and unemotional. Even when talking about things that happened that had a huge effect on her life, you couldn't really sense any emotion behind it. This shows that the author has become numb to the realization that she was kidnapped and lied to and abused for nearly two decades. She holds no anger towards the man who ruined her life nor does she blame anyone. I think  that displays strength, being able to forgive someone who did something so wrong
2.)
  • Jaycee Dugard: at the beginning of the book talked about her 11 year old self and how life was before she was abducted. She had a family who cared about her very much and for the most part, was a very happy little girl. She had blonde hair, blue eyes, and freckles that covered her face. She had a few jealousy issues with her new baby sister who received a lot of attention from her parents. She left to school one day, without saying goodbye to her mother who forgot to say goodbye on her way to work, not thinking anything other than the fact that her mother forgot her. On her way to school, she was tased and next thing she knew was waking up in a strange car arriving at a strange place. For the next eighteen years this is where she was kept with her new "family". She was told she wasn't wanted anymore and she believed it. She lived with her abductors and even had children with him. She was very gullible and trusting, to the people who deserved that least.
  • Phillip: the man who abducted Jaycee, an average looking middle aged man. You never would have imagined him to be kidnapping children by judging off of just his appearance, Jaycee explained. He proved to be extremely manipulative, selfish, sick-minded, abusive, etc. He lied to Jaycee from the beginning about why she was there, making him seem like the good guy. He would abuse her and use him for his own, personal needs and completely kept her brainwashed for eighteen years before getting caught.
  • Nancy: Phillip's accomplice and girlfriend who completely adores Phillip and believes everything he tells her and does anything he wants her to. She is so blinded by Phillip's act that she has no clear understanding of what's right or wrong, she helped him kidnap Jaycee and helped keep this a secret for eighteen years. She's just as manipulative as Phillip, pretending to care about Jaycee.
3.) Jaycee is the one doing the writing, but Phillip and Nancy are the only other characters talked about enough to get an idea of how they were as people since the book was written about her time spent hidden in their backyard. Although they completely betrayed Jaycee and took her youth and childhood right out of her hands, they were the only people Jaycee felt she knew. They were the only people besides her children that she talked to or even saw for eighteen years.

More on the Characters

1.) All of the characters are described and portrayed mainly through indirect characterization
2.) Jaycee's syntax and diction remained constant throughout her story, along with her very monotone attitude towards the years of her life that she chose to share with the world.
3.) I would describe the protagonist, Jaycee Dugard, as a flat and static protagonist. A flat, static protagonist doesn't show much change throughout the story. Reading her story made me angry at times because there were moments when I felt like she could have done something. There were times when she could have gotten away if she had tried, or told someone when they  brought her out into public but she never did. She remained quiet and always went back to that hidden room in the Phillip's backyard. This behavior wasn't her fault, they were her family in a very dysfunction, sick way and she knew nothing other than them and running away was a scarier thought than continuing her life the way it was. It was just discouraging because I kept hoping that she was going to change, that she would realize how wrong everything was.
4.) Usually when I finish a book, I always feel like I had just met the characters and experienced the story with them but I did not feel that way at the end of reading A Stolen Life. I felt for Jaycee the whole time I was reading and some parts really broke my heart, because no one should EVER have to go through what she went through but i never actually felt like I knew her. She displayed very little emotion in her words and made it a little more difficult to connect to her on a personal level

My Enduring Memory

I will remember this story forever. Its hard to believe that something so terrible could really happen to a poor, innocent, eleven-year old girl who was just walking to school. It makes me so angry that there are such horrible people out there that would even consider doing such an awful thing. It makes you really start to think that you can't trust anyone. It's too scary now days to even let your child walk to school, even if it's just around the corner, because you don't know what will or can happen during those few minutes. I think the thing that bothers me the most about this story is how Jaycee's abductor, Phillip, gained Jaycee's trust and managed to keep her hidden and secluded from the rest of the world for as long as eighteen years. With his manipulation skills and never ending lies, he managed to get Jaycee to believe that her parents didn't want her and that there was nothing she could do to get help. He told her that they were her new family and that he loved her, and she eventually believed him. There was always a part of her that knew what he was doing was wrong but she never did anything to stop him or to help herself or her children. It also sickens me that she had to have his children, especially at such a young age. It tore her apart knowing that he was the father of her children and that she brought children into such a horrible living condition. She did not want her children to grow up in the living conditions that she was in. It breaks my heart that eighteen years of this poor girl's lives are nothing but painful, dysfunctional memories.

SIDE NOTE

I just want to say that this story was very touching. I have never read something like this before and its very eye opening not only for me but to the world. Its just scary to think that this can happen to anyone. You might think that your community is safe when it really isn't. If you have the chance to read this amazing story I would if I wear you. it has such powerful impact that it might change the way you think.

Activity 26: Making Predictions and Asking Questions

1)My prediction about the content of the article due to what the subtitle claims, it is going to talk about the debts it has left the nation and how it has affected us. How people's lives were affected not only emotionally but also financially. Much detail will be included in the article because it clearly left a huge crisis not only on the state and the people, but also the world.
 2) The connection between our first article of, "What is a life worth," and the article from Steve Jobs is the theme of writing. They both have the similar titles of 'what is life worth' and 'what is a life worth.'I feel like they would both have some type of connection. they both talk about life itself and the content should be pretty similar. My question is what's their purpose for this article and main points in their perspectives of each article. why they chose to have this theme for their article because it has such a powerful impact.
3) In my honest opinion, it seem as if this article is going to speak in somewhat the perspective of first person but also dialogue because the tittle does seem to infer that it is dedicated to those who were affected in the 9/11 event. Skimming through the sections of writing, I get the vibe that it is written that perspective.

Activity 25: Surveying the text

in my honest opinion, if I were to look at this article and would guess how much time it would take, I would guess less than 30 minutes with full concentration with no distractions. The body paragraphs are pretty short but I would guess that there would be main points to each and every line and paragraph which can be time consuming to understand and trying to pick out the main points and ideas.
I have read Hamlet more then once and I will say that and piece of writing was short but very time consuming because of the text and concept, the words chosen and the format. More deep thinking was required into Hamlet's piece of, "To be or not to be" because I had to keep read reading the lines to try to understand what was going on.
The publication i know is from Shakespeare himself i believe in the 1600's is when he published his piece of writing.
his type of writing is found to be cognitive thinking. The decision that needs to be made is described attached to results of the thrown.
I have snese this kind of writing in schools of education more likely or individuals who love plays or who are writers themselves and like Shakespeare for inspiration

Argument

the argument I had observed over the weekend was with my brother and sister. the argument was about when they were in high school and they couldn't remember the teachers name that they both had for English and they both had made up names. turns out in the end they were both wrong. they had to call my mom to see what her name was

Literature Analysis #2

Topics
1. My book, No Limits, is about the journey and triumphs Michael Phelps went through before winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He talks about all his hard training and the process of becoming that successful at such a young age. He also takes you inside his mindsets and how he gets mentally prepared before a big meet or before a race. He reveals the secrets to his performance in the pool.
2. This author decided to write this because he wanted to share his experience and his success. He has a lot of fans all over the world that look up to him and after the 2008 Olympics he got more attention because of how many gold medals he won and so many people asked him how he did it so he just wrote a book about it.
3. I chose this book because I am a swimmer and I have looked up to Michael Phelps for as long as I can remember. He is very successful and I love to watch him swim. He has the most perfect technique and a beautiful stroke its unbelievable. I wanted to see inside his mind and that's the reason why I chose to read this book. he is one of my biggest inspiration.
4. I did find this book realistic because I am a swimmer and I can relate to some of the things he talks about like mindsets, and how you train, eat, and what you put your body through. Its easy for me to understand it unlike if you were a golfer because we do different things.
People
1. You can tell Phelps didn't make up any people. He takes you through his childhood and how he use to get bullied by kids and even a teacher. he has been famous since he was about 13 and we have been paying attention to him since and you can see what he has been through. His tone is positive throughout the book because he never gave up. it shows a lot in a person who has been through a lot like him and just stays positive.
2. Two people he talks about is his mom and bob which is his coach. Bob has been his only coach, the way he describes him makes him seem like he isn't the type of person who gives up. he never gave up on Michael. his Mom is just adorable. she was a single parent raising three kids and never left their side. She was always there to cheer them on. That's a very supportive mom.
3.These people are interesting to write about because they have been there for Michael since day one. They never left his side and are so supportive.

visual thinking

Today we had an online conference call with Amanda Lyons during class. She talked about doodling, and using our doodles as note taking. She really inspired and kind of opened my thinking, in the sense that i doodle on my papers all the time. If i can incorporate doodling and drawing, with notes and schoolwork.  she explained how everyone can draw. You may not be good but you can draw. It can help you with note taking and I will certainly take that in mind that it can be better then just putting words on my paper and forgetting all about the lecture vs. drawing something that opens my mind and I wont forget.

NO CHILD LEFT UNTABLETED

This article opened my eyes a little bit with the way teachers are teaching now. Its pretty awesome that the teachers are teaching from the tablets and at the same time learning. Its definitely something different from how it use to be, A lot of teacher don't like this idea though. Personally as a student I think its a great learning process and everyone can easily teach someone something really fast. it helps to do something different and the internet is basically our lives now. we cant go back so why not start using the tablets?

DECLARATION OF LEARNING INDEPENDENCE

I, Elizabeth Pulido, declare that I will try my  hardest to get an A in this class and put in more effort in my homework. I will also try my hardest to turn in the homework on time. I will try my hardest to read every book assigned, be on top of things, answer all the following questions assigned, and when I don't get something to ask instead of doing it wrong. I love the way you teach and is something different and I will try my hardest to get comfortable with the way you teach. my other goal is to get at least a 3.8 or above for both semesters.

Essay Idea

Our essay topic was a persuasive essay. The reason we choose it was mainly because one person in our group said she was good at it , and the other three said that it wasn't their best. We thought it would be a perfect opportunity for that one person to explain the three people how the persuasive essay works and that way they can all build up their persuasive writing skills. Also obesity is a very big problem right now. it is worse then it has ever been and its easy to get statistics that will help prove your point and that's a good skill to have.

This Is Phat

Two-thirds of the U.S. population is overweight, and about one-quarter to one-third of adults are obese.
Dr. Milham says "the high obesity levels in the US is not surprising, because the U.S. uses the earth as the major conduit for neutral return currents."
its not just poor dieting, it is also lack of exercise.
There are more obese and overweight people living in the US than there are healthy.

A Truely Interesting Peice of Non-Fiction

I read this truly interesting piece of non-fiction. it talked about teachers reveal what they do during exams. they try to avoid boredom by having sharpening pencils to spotting the ugliest pupil in the hall. one teacher was so bored that they spent time translating different exams to foreign languages. aren't teachers suppose to be paying attention to their students while giving these exams instead of messing around? it was truly interesting because I would have never though teachers would do something like this!

REFLECTIONS ON WEEK 1

1. Are there any factors that you think are going to affect your participation or experience in this class? Access to a computer?  Mobile/smart phone?  Transportation?  Friends/family? Schedule?

No I don't think there are any factor that are going to affect my participation in the class. The only think that will affect me is if my internet isn't working and I have no way of getting online. also if I am not here for a swim meet because I compete for USA swimming. so some days I will miss because I will be away for a competition

2. Think of an awesome best ever learning experience that changed you. What did you learn? Where were you? What happened? Who else was there? Did it teach you anything about how you learn (or pay attention... or remember, or think?) How did you know what was happening?

When I was in 9th grade I went to USA junior nationals for swimming. there were over 2,000 athletes there and I was so nervous. I trained so hard and I knew I was prepared for that meet. once it was time for me to get up and race, I psyched myself out and did bad, I was devastated. luckily I still had three more races. my coach calmed me down and told me to focus this is what I trained to do. I got my head inline and it was time for me to race again. I did pretty good and dropped some time. I was proud with what I went. it made me realize if you want something bad then you have to train for it and be committed. I trained 4 months straight by myself for that meet. I came out of that meet feeling like a winner.

3.What are you most [excited/concerned] about in this class? What do you look forward to in learning?  How do you think it can/will make a practical difference in your life?

My most concern is the essays. the only reason is because English has always been one of weakest subjects. I am not to bad at writing essays but I need improvement. I look forward to sharing thoughts and just to see how other people process things in their heads differently than me and to hear all their thoughts. I have already learned some stuff just within the week we have been in school.
